4.5 Gay Street was part of 6 Gay Street, and was subdivided in 1958, to Vice Admiral of the Navy, Marcel A.E. Gouin, from his family (who owned 6 Gay Street). He was a Nantucket native, naval aviator, graduate of the Naval Academy, and Commander of the Aircraft carrier Midway just after World War II. There was a barn on the site, which he took down to build the cottage. Nowadays, the home has been completely renovated, repainted and refurnished and offers in-Town convenience with traditional charm. The brick courtyard area offers an additional quiet retreat and features Adirondack-style furnishings. There is no outdoor grill permitted at the property. There is no off-street parking at the property, but a street permit may be obtained at the Nantucket Police Station.
